Why blog?

I enjoyed reading one of the latest entries at Mission Safari entitled,”Why I blog”.  Obviously we’ve put a lot of thought into the advantages of having a website and blog as missionaries.  Recently I’ve talked to other missionaries about blogging, an I’ve encouraged them to think about it.  There are some unique things that blogging can do, and I think that this entry at Mission Safari gives a great overview.

It’s been a lot easier to keep up with my favourite missionary blogs at My Missionary Blogs [link no longer available - visit Missionary-Blogs.com] page.  One of the missionaries there liked my idea so much that he copied it (which is ok because I’ve copied him too)!  If you haven’t visited this page, check it out.  I’m hoping to add some more missionaries to the list soon.

We blog for many of the reasons you’ll read in the above post.  Blogging gives us an easy way to share our lives with you, and because you can comment it can be a two-way conversation.  It brings this website to life in a way that it never could be if we were simply trying to keep individual pages updated (we try to do that too, but not every week).  I hope this blog allows you to be a part of our lives and ministry in a way that would not otherwise be possible.

If you’re a missionary yourself, be sure to contact us and we’ll give you some ideas to help you start a blog of your own!

Building breakings and Brainerd Blogs

There’s been some excitement around home lately.  Over the weekend someone broke into our apartment building (that is, assuming it was an outside job), broke into the manager’s office and stole all the keys.  The keys to the front and back doors of four buildings, the keys to every apartment, deadbolts and doorknobs, storage rooms, and even the keys to all the mailboxes.  Yes, that’s right - this means that whoever stole them could walk right in anywhere at any time.  Now we’re not sure exactly how long it was until this was discovered (it seems it happened on the weekend, and was discovered on Monday), but very quickly there were security guards hired and we had to show ID to get in.  Locks were changed, new keys handed out.  I believe it was said that the whole deal was costing the company $70,000.  (Hmmmmm…I wonder who will end up paying that in the end?)

Anyway, so far we haven’t heard of anything being stolen except in the office, although the investigation is continuing.  There’s been more mischief around here - when Shari’s parents were here at Christmas, a window in their car was smashed (I think we actually heard it happen - sounded like a gunshot).  Oddly enough (and this is why I call it mischief), all the gifts they were giving for Christmas were in the car, and nothing was stolen.

Ah, life in the city.  I once told myself that I was only living in the city temporarily, until I began to feel that God was leading us to be city missionaries.  Today, that’s where the people continue to gather.

Cities are also key places for contact with unreached communities in surrounding rural areas.  So there is a tremendous need for city missionaries.  Perhaps a post like this doesn’t encourage you to become a city missionary, but remember that wherever you go it is God who is your security, not a lock or a security guard.

Now for a real missionary experience.  Here’s a really neat blog, from a missionary long promoted to Heaven.  This pioneer missionary worked among native peoples in the USA, and inspired many famous missionaries, most notably William Cary.  Do you know who it is?  That’s right, David Brainerd.  Though he had a very brief career, his influence has been incredible.

Basically, someone is blogging his journal day by day.  Check it out and leave your comments.  David Brainerd’s Blog will open in a new window.

More on missionary blogs….

When I was writing on Sunday about some of the award-winning blogs out there, I neglected to mention any “rising stars”.  I wish I knew where to find more missionary blogs - but there are a few good ones out there.  One of the newer ones is the Knightly News Update, featuring a Canadian family on their way to Namibe, Angola, Africa.

Knightly news update

I’ve enjoyed the Knightly’s blog so far, and look forward to hearing more.  For a missionary, it’s good to hear from someone who’s “going through the same thing”, and at the same time it’s good to get a glimpse into a life that is very different.

After my frustration trying to find good missionary blogs, I decided to start my own collection.  The downside is that you can only include blogs that have a news feed (which is why you won’t see the Knightly News Update on there yet), but here’s how it works.  It just looks like a bunch of headlines.  As any missionary in the list adds a new entry, their entry goes to the top of the list.  So what you’re seeing is a bunch of blogs from a bunch of missionaries all at once.  Intrigued?  Ok, why not go and check out My Missionary Blogs [link no longer available - check out Missionary-Blogs.com]?

Experiments and fellow bloggers

Do you like this blog?  You can now vote for it!  This blog has been listed for some time on blogs4god, but with over 1200 blogs, believe it or not, this humble journal gets lost in the shuffle.  Not that I need votes to feel good about myself, but if you do like this blog you might encourage someone else to visit with your vote.

I was playing around with a little javascript that you can see on the left under the weather.  It’s supposed to detect where you’re from.

I was checking out some of the winners of the 2005 Evangelical Underground Evangelical Blog Awards.  There’s some good blogs there.  Of course, I would rather you stick around and read our blog, but hey, there are some worthwhile reads out there! :) The best international blog (yes, these are American awards!) was won by a fellow Canadian - Tim Challies.  You can visit his blog and even enter his contest to win a couple of books…

The winning missionary was Keith Smith for his blog under the acacias.  He works among the Fulani people of Burkina Faso.  A runner-up in the missionary category was Mission Safari, by a medical missionary in Kenya.  I’ve enjoyed this blog so far, and I like this cute post about his daughter’s birthday present.  It reminds me of the jaguar I took a picture of in Belize - remember this photo?  I was about as close to him as it looks.  A little nerve-wracking!

By the way, notice the new feature on this blog of trackback.  Trackback allows one blogger to reference another blog in his or her blog, and then link to it.  Sound confusing?  Well, it sure was to me!  But I think I’m starting to get it.  For example, in theory I should be able to connect to the Mission safari blog entry that I mentioned above.  Then my entry will show up in his blog.  Or something.  Anyway, this is the place for experimentation!
