Ten years ago today, we were having a kids’ club in the community of Las Palmas. This special outreach was in partnership with some friends from the church in the community of Santa Barbara, the “first” Path of Life Bible Church in Ixtapaluca.
That’s pretty cool, but there’s something else cool about this picture. Two of the little kids that you see here learning about the Lord Jesus are now in our youth group. They were helping me last month to teach songs to the kids at our vacation Bible school at the Path of Life. They are now reaching other kids with the gospel!
And you’ll also spot Nathanael in this shot, who is now serving the Lord in Canada. Hannah was old enough to help with the kids, but she’s not in this picture.
No, we’re not going to the beach. But the beach is coming to us!
Tomorrow we’re starting our vacation Bible school (VBS) at the Path of Life Bible Church Las Palmas. Yesterday people of the church were scurrying around putting up last-minute decorations and getting in a little last-minute music practice. This involved shipbuilding, arboriculture, aviculture and mariculture – that is, creating an activity station that looked like a big boat, completing the creation of palm trees, and putting up birds and sea creatures. There’s sand and sun and – well, it looks like it’s going to be a fun week!
Shari has been working hard on activities to help the kids memorize their Bible verses – activities that also involve sand and sea creatures!
There’s also a team coming from the USA to help us out – they arrive today.
Sand testers
So the VBS will be four days long – Tuesday to Friday. Parents are invited to join right in. The focus is on the Lord Jesus and His Truth as the solid rock in a world of shifting sand.
In the middle of all the preparations for the VBS, we’ve been packing – hence the boxes! We’re preparing to move, although we still haven’t found a house to move to. We would appreciate your prayers as we continue to look! But meanwhile we’re getting things organized and labelled and ready to go wherever they’re going. It’s a lot of work after we’ve been settled for so many years!
Please do be in prayer for the many teachers who will be sharing with the kids this week! We’re so thankful for a church that has been so involved in every aspect of this week’s activities!
Yesterday Shari and Hannah were in the community of Jesús MarÃa, lending a hand at the kids’ club that the church is putting on this week. Quite a crowd, as you can see!
The theme of the year is “Under Construction”, and so there are lots of hard hats and safety vests to be seen. Yesterday, a large group from the power company happened to be meeting right by the club, getting ready to do some repairs. So some people from the church invited a few of them over to stand at the front while the kids sang one of their songs – adding an extra “construction ambience”, and hopefully being a bit of a witness to the workers too! 🙂
As is often the case, there was a little class for the Moms who were hanging around. Shari joined them toward the end, and had a good chance to talk with them. There are so many challenges that people (including Moms!) go through, and it’s hard to see them struggling to find answers without really knowing Christ. Please pray that God would work in their lives, so that they would accept God’s gift!
And please pray for the church and for the kids as they continue to learn about the Lord today and tomorrow!
Last Tuesday we travelled to the north part of the city to celebrate a 15th birthday party with our friend Laura. Yes, Shari made the cake, and we enjoyed some Chinese food (P.F. Chang’s). Too short a visit, but a good time.
Last week 3 of the 4 interns who come each weekend were here for the whole week, so the Frys kept them pretty busy. They spent a lot of time in public schools here, Junior High Schools, where they shared about values and God with about 2700 students (yes, you read that right!).
On Friday night we had a really good study with a woman we’re just getting to know. We read about how Jesus calmed the storm.
On Saturday there was a youth event, and a few of the youth from the public schools came, and showed interest in spiritual things.
Saturday morning, the weekly kids’ club. I think there were over 20 kids there – it’s been growing every week!
On Sunday we had our second service in Las Palmas. This week, due to a conflicting event at the party hall, we had rented another room in the neighbourhood. But no one was there to let us in! After many phone calls, someone finally came 15 minutes after the service was supposed to start! Locked out before Sunday service #2 In spite of getting in a little late, we had a good service. I preached about the gospel from Paul’s discussion of Abraham in Romans 4 (thanks to those who prayed!).
Aside from these things, there are a lot of background things we’re working on, which are keeping us busy. There are more activities coming up on the weekend — and a wedding, in fact!
Oh, by the way – if you’d like to see a few recent pictures of what’s been going on, I just uploaded a whole bunch to our Recent Shots… album.
Visiting Laura – February 2016Thanks to those who prayed for Laura and her Mom last week. We enjoyed a good visit with them, and made some new friends along the way. If you want to continue praying, that would be great. Lord willing He will allow us to visit again later this year.
For those who have our prayer calendar and are following along, you can most certainly pray for the children at the orphanage this week. However, it looks like Hannah’s visit there on Saturday has been cancelled.
But there are other things coming up this week! I have a couple of English classes on Tuesday (my regular class, plus I’m filling in for Tina). Shari has her baking class on Thursday, and the kids’ club and Bible study is on Saturday. We had a great kids’s club on Friday, but no one came for the adult study. But we did have a youth study, led by Rod.
We’re also gearing up for an anniversary service in March, which means that both Shari and Nathanael are going to music practices this week.
I’m also preparing for my last sermon in a series this Sunday – dealing with some pretty major topics, so hopefully my brain will be awake!
