Missions FAQ

What is a "missionary"?

For our purposes, we will be using the term "missionary" to loosely refer to Christians who go to another culture to share the truth about Jesus.

We have no divinely inspired definition of the english word.  Most versions of the Bible do not even contain the word.  So why is it important to define?  We're simply clarifying for the sake of clear communication, so we all know what we're talking about as we discuss other missions questions.

Let's be clear about what we're not saying.  We're not saying that some believers are responsible to make disciples and some are not.  As has often been said, it's everyone's responsibility to share the Truth of the Gospel "across the street and around the world."  All of us are individually responsible to see that collectively (as a Church around the world) we reach the entire world for Christ.

We're in this together!  We're not saying that a few super-Christians will reach the world while the rest of us go about our "normal" jobs.  The Great Commission in Matthew 28 is for all Christians.

Everyone does have a unique role in reaching the world.  Those who focus on prayer for the world have a unique role.  Pastors have a unique role.  Those who share Christ with friends at work or school have a unique role, and unique challenges.  As a friend of mine would tell you,"You're unique - just like everybody else!"

It's hard to exactly label all Christians into any kind of category, and there's no need to.  Remember, this is just a general, loose way of narrowing down a specific type of disciple-maker.

Some missionaries are evangelists.  Some repair cars.  Some write music.  Some travel to the other side of the world.  Some go to another culture in their own country.  Some run an office.  Some have a "normal job" within another culture.  But all, individually or as a team are there to see that the people in this culture learn the truth from the Word of God.  This is the way we'll use the term here.*

Some verses to consider:
Matthew 28:18-20
Acts 8:4, 13:2-3
Romans 10:11-14

* Incidentally, I understand this is the way the term is commonly used in Europe, whereas in North America it's more common to think of a missionary as someone who travels "overseas".
