Life, the Universe, and Everything

What is Truth?

This famous question, spoken almost two millenia ago, is still asked today.  Many people today believe that there is no such thing as 'absolute' truth, but that truth is what you make it.  There may be no air, no earth, no internet.  This philosophy is very hard to work out in everyday life.  Christianity (as well as many other religions, and science) claims that there is such a thing as truth (historical, moral, scientific, etc.), and that this truth can be known.

An Unusual Life

In a small town in the middle east, a boy was born to a poor working family.  This boy grew up to make the amazing claim that he was God's Son - in fact, claiming to be one with God Himself.

Was he crazy?  He didn't seem to be.  This carpenter taught some of the most revolutionary things the people had ever heard, and yet these teachings made a lot of sense.  Love one another, for example.  He cared for the sick, who were often outcasts of society.  He showed that individuals had value.  Perhaps he was simply mistaken about his identity?  Not likely.  Perhaps he was lying!  Impossible.  If any man in history is known for being moral and upright, Jesus is the one!

Jesus proved that he was who he said he was.  He came back from the dead.  The story chronicled in the four gospels and referred to in other books is perhaps one of the most well documented events of history.

It is this man that we have chosen to follow.  Not because he was a good man or a revolutionary, but because he was the Creator of the Universe in human form!  Who better to follow, than the One who knows all things, and has the universe in his control?

But Does He Care?

And better yet, Jesus demonstrated his love for us in a clear way.

Mankind has violated an eternal law by turning its back on its Creator.  The Bible talks about the very first man and woman - how they decided to take away the rightful authority of the Infinite One by disobeying.  Ever since, the world has been filled with all the things people are prone to - war, hate, greed, and all kinds of evil.

Even in our own lives we see the results of what the Bible calls 'Sin'.  We are not pure - not completely perfect.  There is no way we can connect with a perfect God.  The law is that imperfection must be removed.  Evil must eventually be destroyed.  Disobedience must be punished.

But God, in the form of a man, came and suffered with us.  He experienced loss, betrayal, misunderstanding.  And he chose to take all the punishment that we deserved.  That is what happened when he was executed by the Roman Authorities in the early years of the first millennium AD (CE).

The Final Word

The final word is - if we personally turn back to the Creator that the human race has so long rejected, than we will no longer be punished.  We need to realize that we will never be able to be live up to God's standards. And we need to return our lives to God, relying on the fact that Jesus already took our punishment.  You'll be signing up for the greatest adventure of all - what Jesus called 'Abundant Life' - as a follower ('disciple') of Jesus Christ.  He died - but he's alive today.  And he's waiting for you.
