Top 10 FREE Screensavers (at least, some really good ones)The days are pretty much gone when screensavers lived up to their name and saved your screen. Even though modern monitors no longer need them, they serve other purposes - entertainment, security, even education. Being a fan of free screensavers, I thought I'd share with you my pick for your screen. I've tried to avoid some of the newer spectacular savers in favour of ones that will work on both old and new PCs. Here they are, in no particular order:
World Population: First, the educational. This simple screensaver shows the current population of the world. Set the numbers yourself to increase the accuracy (see population info at places like the US Census Bureau). Should work on Windows 3.1 and up.
Dissolve: Eye candy. This one is hard to describe, but it really looks quite nifty. It's just moving dots, but you really have to try it. Because I liked it so much I downloaded a similar one called sparks - moving...well...sparks kinda...
Webshots: Ok, how about getting a little more complex. Webshots is a collection of photos from users all over the world that can be downloaded as a screensaver or used as desktop wallpaper. Just download a sample package, then add to it as much as you like!. (free registration required)
System47: Ok, all you Star Trek fans, time to turn your computer's clock ahead a few hundred years with an authentic LCARS simulation. For you non-fans, it will make your computer look like a Star Trek computer. The detail is amazing, it actually makes sense. This one's even good enough for non-fans! Note there are two versions - one with sound, and one without. You can install both on the same system. Should work with Win9x and up and Mac. If this screensaver doesn't run or runs slow on your computer, try Holodeck3, also an excellent LCARS screensaver (VB4 runtime files required).
Earth: While we're out in space, let's head back to Sector 001 and look at earth. This is a real time animation of earth showing where the sunlight is. If you know your longitude and latitude you can have it always show directly above you, you can get closer or farther away - cool!
Ephemera: Math is beautiful. This screensaver proves it by drawing colourful fractals on your screen. You can even design your own. Pretty.
Quote32: This screensaver simply shows random quotes on your screen. I have included a quote file, and you can add your own quotes or delete quotes. I have not checked through all the quotes to make sure they are appropriate for all audiences, but they should be ok. The creator's home page is here. Requires VB5 runtime files. If you have a fairly new computer, another option is Qliner's Qsaver.
Coke: This one has been around for a looooong time, just like Coca-Cola (but not quite that long). Simply some cute animated Coke cans floating around your screen with various modes of transportation.
FOYD: Fog On Your Desktop. That's pretty much exactly what this screensaver does.
Candle: Now, for some rest. Watch the candle gently flicker on your screen. Unlike a real candle, you can control exactly how long it takes to burn down.
Uh oh, now I have too many screensavers. Which one will I use? Well, thanks to Stewart Hector you can use them all. Download the excellent Screen Saver Changer here, which allows a new screensaver to start every time, without using valuable computer memory and without taking your time.
Honourable Mention
Quotations: Another more simple quotations screensaver, but this time with beautiful photos as well. Download here - 1.5Mb Polymorf3D: For those with the computer to handle it, here's some 3D eye candy created by Adam Dawes. Requires DirectX 8.1 or later. Eye Of The Storm: If you have an always on internet connection, this screensaver tracks hurricanes and tropical storms in real time. Especially interesting at certain times of the year. Night Lights: Again for those with a newer graphics card, this is a view of the earth at night. As the earth rotates you can see where the lights are and where they're not. Quite an amazing view!
