Art was a big theme this year, thanks to some tutoring from one of Tina’s friends. Many people produced works of art. Here are some of the campers hard at work:
And here are the artists at the end of the week (I’ll probably try to post hi-res versions of these photos in our photo gallery one day soon):
It was also cool to pray especially for Hannah, as she prepares to leave Mexico for school in Canada this coming year.
As many of you know, Hannah is hoping to go to school this coming fall in Canada. But how does that work, when you’ve lived two thirds of your life in another country?
After all, you don’t have the many shared experiences of your peers, or their vocabulary, and you don’t know what they know and they don’t know what you know.
Well, that’s where ReBoot fits in, of course!
Reboot is a retreat put on by the Canadian MK Network (under the MORE Network), whose vision is: To provide a safe place for Canadian MKs to review their life stories, be refreshed through worship and peer relationships in order to re-enter and navigate the transition to Canadian life and culture with God’s grace.
There are retreats in Alberta and Ontario. The retreat that Hannah hopes to go to is in Calgary this August, hosted by Ambrose University. It’s for MKs age 17-20.
However, there’s a catch – the organizers want to see if there are enough students before they commit to running the program. By March 31st they want to have around 15 students registered, or they might *gasp* cancel!
So would you help us spread the word? If you know any MKs who may be transitioning to life in Canada, or even who have returned to Canada over the past year or two, tell them to consider ReBoot. There’s lots of information in that link, including videos and testimonials.
We’re continuing our monthly series of pictures/videos from 10 years ago. This one is a picture. Apparently January 2008 was a big month for birthday parties. Of course, with all their school friends, a lot of months were big for birthday parties!
Anyway, a part of this particular party, for a friend from school, was horseback riding! So, here’s Hannah, ten years ago today!
Today the Fry family headed north to Pennsylvania. Their son Daniel has lived up there for a while now. But today they’re taking their daughter Cathy up to make the move, starting a new semester of classes on Monday at a new school.
So, this is obviously a time to put up a classic Cathy photo. Here you can see Cathy with Hannah and her brother David (sporting a very cool Canada cap). This was over 8 years ago, when they were all going to school together (though in different grades). Cathy is dressed up in Mexican garb for a special presentation.
Anyway, keep the Fry family in your prayers as they get Cathy settled and then come home without her. 😢
Hannah and Cathy – Independence Day 2012And, of course, pray for Cathy as she settles into a very different life, adjusting while she dives into her schoolwork at the same time!
Hello from windy Ixtapaluca! I feel like I’m on the Saskatchewan prairies, except that there are leaves everywhere. 🙂 I suppose it’s part of “Winter Storm Benji”, which seems to stretch from the Maritimes in Canada down to Mexico. It will likely be below 0C here over the weekend (lows overnight), a bit low for December here. And rather chilly in houses with no heat! A random picture for you – Hannah was able to get her unicycle repaired the other day. We have a repair place that sets up shop on the street every Saturday near our home, and for about CA$7 for parts & labour Hannah was good to go! So here’s a quick pic of the repair place.
It’s starting to feel like Christmas here. We actually sang some Christmas carols on Sunday – certainly not a given for our churches around here. And I’ve been meditating on Luke 2:1-20, which I’ll be preaching on soon. It’s been fun to learn some new things from such a familiar passage. I hope I can share them clearly!
So this Sunday we’ll be travelling up north of Mexico City to the city of Pachuca, where I’ll be preaching. And it really feels like “north”, being 4-5 degrees cooler there than it is here. 🙂
The church is Iglesia BÃblica El Buen Pastor (Good Shepherd Bible Church), so we’ll look forward to visiting friends there.
In other news, we’re busy getting home school done for the holidays. And we’re continuing with services and studies. We have our normal study tonight, and Shari and Hannah finished up a study they’ve been having with another mother/daughter on Wednesday.
I won’t get into the earthquake relief stuff here, but that is still going on. Hopefully I can write more, either here or by mail for those who have donated to that project.
We’re also putting together our upcoming visit to Canada – next spring/summer. Although it’s a short visit, there is a lot of preparation involved (actually, sometimes shorter trips require more preparation!). But some things are starting to take shape.
We are still looking for a place to stay while we’re in Canada – preferably in north Calgary. If you know of anything we could rent/borrow/etc, please let us know. We need to find a place soon, preferably before Christmas.
We appreciate those of you who have been praying for our family, and our church. Our church is facing a lot of major challenges right now, so keep praying!
If I wrote here more often, I wouldn’t be writing such a random collection! Well, it’s me end-of-year resolution to try to write more. 🙂
