Hannah Graduates

From what? you may ask.

Well, Tuesday is Children’s Day here in Mexico (in case you’re wondering, it’s the 20th of November in the rest of North America).  So they started a tradition in our church.  When a child close to turning 12, they “graduate” from the children’s activities and enter the youth group.

So, Hannah, along with four other kids, “graduated” today.

A special program was planned.  Unfortunately, a few things went awry.  First, the organizer wasn’t able to come for health reasons.  And then, during the program, it started to rain.

But it takes more than rain to dampen spirits around here!  With some last minute (or long after last minute) planning and organizing, there was a short program, prizes, and ice cream (what can go wrong if you have ice cream?).  And a good turn-out.

So – what happened to those 12 years anyway?  It’s been our joy to see Hannah grow in the Lord.  We’ve seen a desire in her to learn from God’s Word and share her faith.  It’s been great to have 12 years to get to know her – and I hope we have many more!

Women’s Conference Today!

Today there’s a women’s conference in Jesús María!  Women from many churches in Mexico City will be coming, and the speaker will be Karla Topp.

Karla is one of our team members who serves with her family in another part of Mexico City.  The theme is Is your heart an altar for God?

Sunrise Service 2013

We weren’t going to do it.  But tradition is tradition.  So, on Resurrection Sunday, we had a sunrise service.

Actually, we had a really good weekend.  On Friday evening we had a short Good Friday service.  I created a harmony of the four Gospels – just the story of Good Friday (well, Thursday evening until Friday evening).

Normally, of course, it’s much better to read one Gospel at a time.  Every writer has his own perspective, his own purpose.  So you lose that when you read a harmony.

On the other hand, because this is real history, it’s interesting to see how things actually transpired, filling in all the little details that are in one Gospel or another.

For example, you can really see the control Jesus had over the situation in the Garden.  And Pilate’s remarkable continued efforts (to a point!) to have Jesus released.

On Sunday we loaded some people from Jesús María into the van and headed up to the Valtierra’s home for our sunrise service.  Somehow we managed to start the service before sunrise, and were worshipping God with music when the sun peaked over the hills.

We had a good morning hanging out with friends, eating, worshipping, and remembering the antics of the team from Canada that was there last year. 😉

Sendero de Vida Jesús María – 3 years!

On the 24th of March we celebrated three years of meeting as a church in Jesús María!  And what a service it was.

We had some special music during the service, and I preached.  But what was truly amazing was to hear the testimonies of people in the congregation.

Wow.

And I mean all kinds of testimonies.  People who have come to know the Lord through the ministry of believers of the church.  People who maybe aren’t doing so well, and who shared that.  People who have been searching, people who have been finding God’s truth.  People whose marriages have been healed.  And some of these have amazing stories – I won’t share them publicly here, but that gives you an idea of what God has been doing!

Afterwards we went over to the community centre for a potluck (since we rent a place just for Sunday mornings, we get “kicked out” after the service – in a nice way!).  We finally took the picture below later in the afternoon – by that time a lot of the people who had come to the service were gone (although we may have picked up a person or two who didn’t come to the service!), but it will show you a few of the faces you can pray for!  (There’s currently a high resolution version of this photo in our photo gallery).

Three Years – And Nothing Can Separate Us

This morning I’m preaching at a special service – the third anniversary of our church, Iglesia Bíblica Sendero de Vida Jesús María.  We have been going through Romans, and I think it’s providential that we came to the last part of Romans 8 this morning.  What a wonderful comfort as we face an uncertain future!

I’m handing out a little card for everyone this morning.  One side has this (in Spanish, of course):

life and death (Philippians 1:21)
angels and rulers (Ephesians 6:12)
things present and things to come (1Corinthians 3:21-23)
powers (1Corinthians 15:24-26)
height and depth (Psalm 139:8)
anything else in all creation (Acts 14:21-22)

And then on the other side it says:

Nothing (Romans 8:31)
can separate (John 10:28)
a believer (Acts 17:30-31)
from the love of God (Romans 5:3-5)
in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:23)
our Lord. (Romans 16:20)

A Full Weekend

Tonight – our closing program for the community centre.  Shari is getting ready for a special presentation for those who have come to the baking class.

Tomorrow – a special day of evangelism in our neighbourhood (hosted by the “first church” here).  It should be quite a day!

Sunday – Palm Sunday and our anniversary service (at the “second church”).  Yes – it’s been three years since we started meeting!  I’ll be preaching, and we might be doing something else special in the service (if we can figure out who’s leading so we can ask them).
