{"id":1709,"date":"2012-02-13T19:31:25","date_gmt":"2012-02-14T01:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/?p=1709"},"modified":"2012-02-12T18:38:16","modified_gmt":"2012-02-13T00:38:16","slug":"the-english-lesson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2012\/the-english-lesson.html","title":{"rendered":"The English Lesson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is apparently a very common poem, but I hadn&#8217;t heard it before. &nbsp;I came across it in the very useful and entertaining book, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1611450071\/jcotsweb-20\">Adventures in English<\/a><\/i> by Melvin Bragg (which is so far very helpful for understanding why English is the way it is!). &nbsp;I don&#8217;t know who the author of the poem is &#8211; I have a feeling more than one author has added to it!<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/images\/boxes.gif\" width=\"475\" height=\"161\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Boxes\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"times new roman, times, serif\">We&#8217;ll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes;<br \/>But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes.<br \/>Then one fowl is goose, but two are called geese,<br \/>Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.<\/p>\n<p>You may find a lone mouse or a whole lot of mice,<br \/>But the plural of house is houses, not hice.<br \/>If the plural of man is always called men,<br \/>Why shouldn&#8217;t the plural of pan be called pen?<\/p>\n<p>The cow in a plural may be cows or kine,<br \/>But the plural of vow is vows, and not vine.<br \/>And I speak of a foot, and you show me your feet,<br \/>But I give a boot&#8211;would a pair be called beet?<\/p>\n<p>If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,<br \/>Why shouldn&#8217;t the plural of booth be called beeth?<br \/>If the singular is this and plural is these,<br \/>Why shouldn&#8217;t the plural of kiss be called kese?<\/p>\n<p>Then one may be that, and three may be those,<br \/>Yet the plural of hat would never be hose;<br \/>We speak of a brother, and also of brethren,<br \/>But though we say mother, we never say methren.<\/p>\n<p>The masculine pronouns are he, his and him,<br \/>But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!<br \/>So our English, I think you will all agree,<br \/>Is the trickiest language you ever did see.<\/p>\n<p>I take it you already know<br \/>Of tough and bough and cough and dough?<br \/>Others may stumble, but not you<br \/>On hiccough, thorough, slough, and through.<\/p>\n<p>Well done! And now you wish, perhaps<br \/>To learn of less familiar traps?<br \/>Beware of heard, a dreadful word<br \/>That looks like beard and sounds like bird.<\/p>\n<p>And dead; it&#8217;s said like bed, not bead;<br \/>For goodness&#8217; sake, don&#8217;t call it deed!<br \/>Watch out for meat and great and threat.<br \/>(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.)<\/p>\n<p>A moth is not a moth in mother,<br \/>Nor both in bother, broth in brother.<br \/>And here is not a match for there.<br \/>And dear and fear for bear and pear.<\/p>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s close and rose and lose&#8211;<br \/>Just look them up&#8211;and goose and choose.<br \/>And cork and work and card and ward,<br \/>And font and front and word and sword.<\/p>\n<p>And do and go, then thwart and cart.<br \/>Come, come, I&#8217;ve hardly made a start.<br \/>A dreadful language?
