{"id":1746,"date":"2012-03-14T20:50:32","date_gmt":"2012-03-15T02:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/?p=1746"},"modified":"2012-03-14T20:51:33","modified_gmt":"2012-03-15T02:51:33","slug":"memory-verse-day-3-ancient-and-compact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2012\/memory-verse-day-3-ancient-and-compact.html","title":{"rendered":"Memory Verse Day 3: Ancient and Compact!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><font color=\"maroon\">&quot;Porque yo les entregu&eacute; en primer lugar lo mismo que recib&iacute;: que Cristo muri&oacute; por nuestros pecados, conforme a las Escrituras&quot;<\/font><br \/>(1Corintios 15:3 NBLH)<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"maroon\">&quot;For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures&quot;<\/font><br \/>(1Corinthians 15:3 ESV)<\/center><br \/>So this is one of those passages where I&#8217;m going to memorize more than one verse in a row &#8211; in this case, verses 3, 4, and 5.<\/p>\n<p><b>This is probably one of the oldest passages in the New Testament.<\/b> &nbsp;It is common language that was used to hand on a specific body of information &#8211; such as a creed. &nbsp;Many believe that these verses are a creed of the very first believers, put together only a few years after Jesus&#8217; resurrection, probably before any book of the New Testament was completed.<\/p>\n<p>There is a whole lot of information packed into these few verses. &nbsp;Here in verse 3 we have&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paul reminds them that he shared this with them.<\/li>\n<li>He also claims it is &quot;<i>of first importance<\/i>&quot; (though some translations such as the Spanish here say simply that he shared it first &#8211; which kind of implies the same thing anyway).<\/li>\n<li>He acknowledges that he <i>received<\/i> it from others &#8211; this sounds like a well-known saying of the ancient church, that was passed on by word of mouth.<\/li>\n<li><i>Christ<\/i> &#8211; the Messiah &#8211; that word alone is a huge claim.<\/li>\n<li>He <i>died<\/i> &#8211; this was not controversial.<\/li>\n<li>Why? &nbsp;<i>For our sins<\/i>. &nbsp;Of course this thought is expanded elsewhere, but already it says a lot &#8211; we have sins that were serious enough that the Messiah died, presumably as a Saviour.<\/li>\n<li><i>In accordance with the Scriptures<\/i>&#8230; the Scriptures predicted the need for a Messiah to die for our sins long before it happened. &nbsp;This is not only a statement that the Scriptures (in this case the Old Testament) agree with this statement, but it also shows a high regard for the Scriptures &#8211; this is our source for the truth &#8211; the place we go to in order to verify the creed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yes, a lot packed into a few words. &nbsp;And we&#8217;re only part-way through the sentence!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&quot;Porque yo les entregu&eacute; en primer lugar lo mismo que recib&iacute;: que Cristo muri&oacute; por nuestros pecados, conforme a las Escrituras&quot;(1Corintios 15:3 NBLH) &quot;For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures&quot;(1Corinthians 15:3 ESV)So this is one of those passages [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[1136,1141,1135],"class_list":["post-1746","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-devotional-and-bible","tag-30-days","tag-memory-verse","tag-memory-verses","has-post-title","has-post-date","has-post-category","has-post-tag","has-post-comment","has-post-author",""],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Memory Verse Day 3: Ancient and Compact!
