{"id":1772,"date":"2012-03-29T22:01:59","date_gmt":"2012-03-30T04:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/?p=1772"},"modified":"2012-03-28T15:31:31","modified_gmt":"2012-03-28T21:31:31","slug":"memory-verse-day-18-its-hard-to-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2012\/memory-verse-day-18-its-hard-to-go.html","title":{"rendered":"Memory Verse Day 18: It&#8217;s hard to GO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><font color=\"maroon\">&quot;Vayan, pues, y hagan disc&iacute;pulos de todas las naciones, bautiz&aacute;ndolos en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Esp&iacute;ritu Santo&quot;<\/font><br \/>(Mateo 28:19 NBLH)<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"maroon\">&quot;Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit&quot;<\/font><br \/>(Matthew 28:19 ESV)<\/center><\/p>\n<p>A lot has been made of the word &quot;Go&quot; in this passage. &nbsp;Some people have argued that it doesn&#8217;t actually mean <i>go<\/i> (which kind of begs the question &#8211; why do Greek scholars keep translating it that way?!). &nbsp;No, it means <i>as you are going<\/i> (they say).<\/p>\n<p>In other words, don&#8217;t worry about <i>going<\/i> anywhere &#8211; that&#8217;s not the point. &nbsp;Just share the Gospel <i>wherever you happen to be<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>However, this simply isn&#8217;t the case.<\/b> &nbsp;Now I&#8217;m no Greek scholar, but if you want an easy example, look at another place where this form is used &#8211; Matthew 2:13-14. &nbsp;The angel tells Joseph to get up, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt. &nbsp;No, the angel was not suggesting that, if Joseph happens to be getting up, or sometime someday when Joseph gets up &#8211; no, it&#8217;s a command! &nbsp;Get up Joe! &nbsp;Move it! &nbsp;Get the Child and GET OUT OF HERE!<\/p>\n<p>I wrote a little about this before here: <i><a href=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2008\/great-commission-what-does-go-mean.html\">Great Commission: What does GO mean?<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>No, this is a <i>command<\/i> &#8211; go, make disciples, and baptize.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Jesus of course reinforces this idea when He says <i>all nations<\/i>. &nbsp;No, this was not just if you happened to bump into someone from Samaria (ouch!).<\/p>\n<p>The Jewish disciples really needed extra encouragement that they needed to go &#8211; and in fact needed to go to all nations. &nbsp;As we read about the early days of the Church, we can see God reinforcing this point again and again. &nbsp;He commands them to go, He tells them how the Word would spread (Acts 1:8), He first sends the Gospel in many languages at a time when people from many nations came to Jerusalem (Acts 2:4-11), and He allowed persecution to move them on (Acts 8:1).<\/p>\n<p>Going to all nations was (is?) not easy. &nbsp;But again, the authority of Jesus was with them.<\/p>\n<p>And Jesus is not being overly arrogant here to include Himself with the Spirit and the Father &#8211; here we have Jesus very clearly equating Himself with the other two. &nbsp;This job of reaching the world comes from the Triune God &#8211; Father, Son and Spirit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&quot;Vayan, pues, y hagan disc&iacute;pulos de todas las naciones, bautiz&aacute;ndolos en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Esp&iacute;ritu Santo&quot;(Mateo 28:19 NBLH) &quot;Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit&quot;(Matthew 28:19 ESV) A lot has been [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8,3],"tags":[1136,61,186,458,1141],"class_list":["post-1772","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-devotional-and-bible","category-missions","tag-30-days","tag-great-commission","tag-jesus","tag-matthew","tag-memory-verse","has-post-title","has-post-date","has-post-category","has-post-tag","has-post-comment","has-post-author",""],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
