{"id":5014,"date":"2013-07-31T14:41:48","date_gmt":"2013-07-31T19:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/?p=5014"},"modified":"2013-07-31T14:41:48","modified_gmt":"2013-07-31T19:41:48","slug":"a-long-weekend-here-and-there-and-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2013\/a-long-weekend-here-and-there-and-there.html","title":{"rendered":"A Long Weekend (here and there and there)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We just got back from a long weekend of fun and ministry.<\/p>\n<p>It all started with a drive to a part of Mexico City called <i><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/?ll=19.539408,-99.023423&#038;spn=0.020829,0.040855&#038;t=m&#038;z=15\">Ciudad Azteca<\/a><\/i>. &nbsp;I was admittedly feeling horrible that day, but thanks to a kind wife who drove us I was able to make it!<\/p>\n<table width=\"310\" align=\"right\">\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/images\/ciudad-azteca.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Iglesia B\u00c3\u00adblica Ciudad Azteca\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>In Ciudad Azteca we got together with <b>Camino Global<\/b> team mates the Topps. &nbsp;It was a rare opportunity to catch up and hear more about what&#8217;s been happening with the Topp family and their ministry.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday we visited their church, <b>Iglesia B\u00c3\u00adblica Ciudad Azteca<\/b> (<i>Ciudad Azteca Bible Church<\/i>). &nbsp;It was a very special Sunday, the grand finale of a kids&#8217; club that had been going on for the past few days. &nbsp;So there were a lot of guests, and a special presentation of the Gospel.<\/p>\n<p>Shari and I shared the special music, but we especially enjoyed hearing the songs that the kids had learned over the past week. &nbsp;Karla Topp uses sign language as a part of her ministry, and the kids sang the songs both in Spanish <i>and<\/i> in sign language.<\/p>\n<p>We had a great time after the service talking with the Topps and others from the church about ministry and evangelism in both Ciudad Azteca and Jes\u00c3\u00bas Mar\u00c3\u00ada.<\/p>\n<p>Then we rushed home and got ready for phase 2 of the long weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Shari went on a special &#8220;girls-only&#8221; trip with our co-workers and friends Tiffany and Tina. &nbsp;They headed out on an overnight bus trip to <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=Oaxaca+de+Juarez,+Oaxaca&#038;hl=en&#038;ll=18.145852,-97.283936&#038;spn=5.37465,10.458984&#038;sll=17.10798,-96.83075&#038;sspn=0.675945,1.307373&#038;hnear=Oaxaca,+Mexico&#038;t=m&#038;z=7\"><i>Oaxaca de Ju\u00c3\u00a1rez<\/i><\/a>, a city about 5 hours south east of Mexico City. &nbsp;This is the time of year of <i>the Guelaguetza<\/i>, a famous cultural festival originally in honour of <i>Cente\u00c3\u00b3tl<\/i> (the goddess of corn and agriculture) and <i>la Virgen del Carmen Alto<\/i> (yes, at times both of them together). &nbsp;So they were able to see some cultural events and also take a tour to see some famous sites around the city.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/images\/pineapple-dancers.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"233\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Pineapple dancers in Oaxaca\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile (well, from Monday to Tuesday), the kids and I went to <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=Valle+de+Bravo,+Mexico&#038;hl=en&#038;ll=19.339653,-99.244995&#038;spn=1.264677,2.614746&#038;sll=18.281518,-97.805786&#038;sspn=2.545176,5.229492&#038;hnear=Valle+de+Bravo,+Mexico&#038;t=m&#038;z=9\"><i>Valle de Bravo<\/i><\/a>, about 3 and a half hours west of us. &nbsp;Valle de Bravo is the home of a man-made lake, and lots of tourist activities such as paragliding, boating, and horseback riding.<\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/images\/valle-de-bravo.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"162\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Valle de Bravo\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t have time to be too touristy, but we hung out in a fun bed-and-breakfast, had a snack on a boat-restaurant, and checked out some local sites.<\/p>\n<table width=\"310\" align=\"left\">\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/images\/to-valle-de-bravo.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\" alt=\"The road to Valle de Bravo\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Even the drive to Valle de Bravo was beautiful. &nbsp;It looked like a lot of small family farms, plus some beautiful evergreen forests. &nbsp;During the trip we listened to lots of stories from Acts thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestoriesalive.org\/mp3\/\">Mrs. G<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We got back Tuesday afternoon in time for the <b>Tuesday night Bible study<\/b>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was study #5 of our evangelism study.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been so great to hear about peoples&#8217; experiences sharing the Gospel over the past week, and to see them (and me!) learning how to be more effective. &nbsp;(By the way, if you want to be the first one to help with the study, <a href=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2013\/want-to-help-with-our-study-in-mexico.html\">click here<\/a>!)<\/p>\n<p>Early this morning, Shari returned home, and we&#8217;re all united again! &nbsp;So, I&#8217;m working on some documents (this time tax related, not visa related.&nbsp;&nbsp;Though I was frantically working on visa stuff last week!), preparing for a keyboard class on Saturday, doing laundry, and lots of other odds and ends. &nbsp;So excuse me &#8211;
