{"id":578,"date":"2007-04-17T07:41:46","date_gmt":"2007-04-17T13:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2007\/mexicos-passion-plays.html"},"modified":"2007-04-17T07:41:46","modified_gmt":"2007-04-17T13:41:46","slug":"mexicos-passion-plays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2007\/mexicos-passion-plays.html","title":{"rendered":"Mexico&#8217;s Passion Plays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m going to do two photo journals on some of the events around Holy Week (Easter) here in Mexico. &nbsp;I&#8217;m posting some shots of the TV coverage (this was going to be a video blog, but due to technical difficulties we&#8217;re sticking with the stills).<\/p>\n<p><b>All over Mexico, every year, there are passion plays &#8211; depictions of His crucifixion and resurrection, and the time leading up to them.<\/b> &nbsp;Some of these are small local affairs, but some, such as those in <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mexinsider.com\/taxco.html\">Taxco<\/a><\/b> and <b><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iztapalapa\">Iztapalapa<\/a><\/b> (near Mexico City) are <i>massive<\/i> events. &nbsp;Over a million (perhaps over 2 million) people come to Iztapalapa each year for this.<\/p>\n<p>The events are acted in sequence in real time, including the last supper on Thursday. &nbsp;But Friday is the biggest show &#8211; those dots are people.&nbsp; \ud83d\ude09<\/i><\/font><\/center><br \/>The entire community is involved in the production. &nbsp;There are costumes, horses, the whole bit. &nbsp;I should add that not everything here is entirely &quot;fake&quot;. &nbsp;The actor cast as Jesus must have serious physical stamina to endure beatings, a very heavy cross and significant time <i>on<\/i> the cross.<\/p>\n<p>Many people actually ask the actor portraying Jesus for a miracle. &nbsp;Though they realize he is an actor, they believe God will answer them because of their devotion. &nbsp;In the same way, many of the several hundred actors are looking for miracles, or believe they have been directed by God to be a part of the play.<\/p>\n<p><center><i><font size=\"-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/CottrillCompass.com\/images\/pilot.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Pontius Pilot speaks to the crowd\" \/><br \/>Pontius Pilot speaks to the crowd<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/CottrillCompass.com\/images\/jesus-beaten.jpg\" width=\"410\" height=\"308\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Jesus being beaten by the Roman soldiers\" \/><br \/>Aerial shot of &quot;Jesus&quot; on the way to Gologtha, and I think the woman represents his mother Mary. &nbsp;She&#8217;s holding his mic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/CottrillCompass.com\/images\/jesus-interview.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Interview\"><br \/>With all these realistic props, it&#8217;s quite a shock to all of a sudden see Jesus being interviewed by a reporter!<\/font><\/i><\/center><br \/>This is not <i>just<\/i> about the passion of Jesus. &nbsp;There&#8217;s quite a party atmosphere nearby &#8211; balloons, food, beer, and secular music. &nbsp;Quite a contrast to the somber scenes being portrayed!<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day, they interviewed a lot of people who were visiting Iztapalapa or Taxco or wherever. &nbsp;Of course I could only understand so much, but there were quite a range of responses to the event.<\/p>\n<p><center><font size=\"-1\"><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/CottrillCompass.com\/images\/woman-meditates.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Woman meditates on what's going on\" \/><br \/>Woman meditates on the event. &nbsp;Some people really took the time to consider Jesus&#8217;
