{"id":654,"date":"2007-09-13T20:04:33","date_gmt":"2007-09-14T01:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2007\/los-nios-hroes.html"},"modified":"2018-11-15T10:12:09","modified_gmt":"2018-11-15T16:12:09","slug":"los-nios-hroes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2007\/los-nios-hroes.html","title":{"rendered":"Los Ni&ntilde;os H&eacute;roes"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"310\" align=\"right\">\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/ninos-heroes.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"382\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Los Ni\u00c3\u00b1os H\u00c3\u00a9roes\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Today was a day of commemoration here in Mexico for <i><b>Los Ni&ntilde;os H&eacute;roes<\/b><\/i> &#8211; the Boy or Child Heroes. &nbsp;They&#8217;re especially popular in schools, of course, because they were young heroes and because it&#8217;s almost <b>Independence Day<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah and Nathanael both talked about Los Ni&ntilde;os H&eacute;roes in their classes today &#8211; Nathanael had to bring a picture,  and Hannah coloured <i>this<\/i> picture.<\/p>\n<p><b>So who were they?<\/b> &nbsp;On September 13, 1857, the invading US army was just about to enter Mexico City. &nbsp;The last line of defense was Chapultepec Castle, which was then a military academy. &nbsp;The child heroes, teenaged cadets (US reports said many were 10 &#8211; 16 years old), refused to surrender, but fought bravely until the end (depending on who&#8217;s telling the story, they were either killed or committed suicide). &nbsp;The six heroes were Juan, Francisco, Vincente, Fernando, Juan and Agust\u00c3\u00adn.<\/p>\n<p>Today there is a monument to the heroes (they are now buried there), which incidentally has been honoured by US presidents Truman and Clinton. &nbsp;(See <a href=\"https:\/\/shernandezg.blogspot.com\/2012\/09\/monumento-los-ninos-heroes-altar-la.html\">the monument to Los Ni&ntilde;os H&eacute;roes here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/tentativelists\/1273\/\">Chapultepec Castle is a World Heritage Site<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today was a day of commemoration here in Mexico for Los Ni&ntilde;os H&eacute;roes &#8211; the Boy or Child Heroes. &nbsp;They&#8217;re especially popular in schools, of course, because they were young heroes and because it&#8217;s almost Independence Day.
