{"id":704,"date":"2008-01-04T06:31:05","date_gmt":"2008-01-04T11:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2008\/shari-on-canada.html"},"modified":"2008-01-03T09:22:17","modified_gmt":"2008-01-03T14:22:17","slug":"shari-on-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2008\/shari-on-canada.html","title":{"rendered":"Shari on Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"235\" align=\"right\">\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/images\/calgary-from-the-air.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"525\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\" alt=\"A slice of Calgary from the air (December 16 2007)\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Now that you have the basic story about <a href=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2008\/shari-went-to-canada-now-shes-back.html\">Shari&#8217;s visit to Canada in December<\/a>, I told you I&#8217;d share some of her impressions. &nbsp;Here are a few things that Shari particularly noticed during her visit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are a lot of <b>open spaces<\/b> in Calgary compared to the Cuernavaca\/Mexico City area. &nbsp;The streets are wide, the parking spots are wide, the yards are big. &nbsp;Of course, she was visiting one of the largest (geographically) cities in North America, and it only has a million people &#8211; Calgary is unusually &quot;spread out&quot;.<\/li>\n<li>As compared to our house, the <b>hot water<\/b> lasts <i>forever<\/i> &#8211; no rushing to get your shower done! &nbsp;And you can even take <i>baths<\/i> (bath tubs are rare in Mexico).<\/li>\n<li>Things were <b>very organized<\/b> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calgaryairport.com\/\">Calgary airport<\/a>. &nbsp;In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aicm.com.mx\/home.php\">Mexico City<\/a>, you were supposed to &quot;just know&quot; that you had to fill out such-and-such a form. &nbsp;And her departure gate was <i>changed<\/i> three times! &nbsp;At the last change she had to cross the entire airport (a 20 minute walk\/sprint) and got to the gate 15 minutes before departure &#8211; fortunately, the plane left late&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>You can put <b>TP<\/b> in the toilet in Canada (in Mexico there are issues with personal and city sewage systems &#8211; hence the little garbage cans beside each toilet).<\/li>\n<li>The feeling of <b>cold weather <\/b>was weird (it was around 0C\/32F in Calgary), and so was the feeling of actually <a href=\"https:\/\/cottrillcompass.com\/blog\/2007\/canadians-mexicans-and-cold-weather.html\">being able to <b>warm up<\/b> inside<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li>You can speak <b>English<\/b> in Canada, which is handy because we speak it pretty well. &nbsp;However, Shari noticed that <b>Spanish<\/b> kept coming out of her <i>boca<\/i> unintentionally &#8211; especially the &quot;polite&quot; words (Gracias, mande?, disculpe&#8230;).<\/li>\n<li>There is so much <b>selection<\/b> &#8211; so many different brands in the stores! &nbsp;Of course, this needs to be qualified &#8211; we probably have a greater selection of many things in Cuernavaca (yogourt drinks, sweet breads, chili peppers), while they have a greater selection of certain things in Canada (maple syrup, mittens, Corner Gas DVDs). &nbsp;But still, walking into a grocery store was overwhelming. &nbsp;And going into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toysrus.ca\">Toys &quot;R&quot; Us<\/a> &#8212; unbelievable. &nbsp;Why do kids need all this STUFF??<\/li>\n<li>When you ask for water in Canada, sometimes people give you water <i>right from the tap!<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now that you have the basic story about Shari&#8217;s visit to Canada in December, I told you I&#8217;d share some of her impressions. &nbsp;Here are a few things that Shari particularly noticed during her visit: There are a lot of open spaces in Calgary compared to the Cuernavaca\/Mexico City area. &nbsp;The streets are wide, the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,5],"tags":[51],"class_list":["post-704","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-just-for-fun","category-mexico","tag-canada","has-post-title","has-post-date","has-post-category","has-post-tag","has-post-comment","has-post-author",""],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
