We conducted a poll on our website asking what your favourite (favorite for you Americans) Easter hymn is. In second place was a 33 year old song by Bill and Gloria Gaither,"Because He Lives". But the number one Easter Hymn was "Christ the Lord is Risen Today" by Charles Wesley about 265 years ago. Charles was about 32 when he wrote this hymn. It was only a year after he was saved. The hymn was written for the first service in a new chapel in London, England, which was a converted iron foundry (metalwork factory). It became known as the Foundry Meeting House, and the first collection of hymns became known as the Foundry Collection. The hymn started out with a different tune and eleven verses. There were no "Alleluia!"s in the original either. An editor added them so that the poem would fit the new tune. Not a major change, but it may be one of the things that added to the popularity of the song. Charles and his brother John both wrote hymns, and were concerned that their hymns were so often reprinted but also so often changed without their permission. They probably wouldn't mind a few extra Alleluias. Charles was a preacher and poet, and wrote over 6000 hymns, many of which are still commonly used today. He gave most of his life to ministry in his local area of London, though of course the impact of his work reached around the world. Charles is remembered as one of the founders of Methodism. The verses of praise common in our hymnbooks today are in the first part of Charles' hymn, and leave out much of our response that he eluded to in later verses. Take for example these verses that focus on our personal praise and living our lives in the light of His resurrection power: Praise to Thee by both be given, Alleluia! Thee we greet triumphant now, Alleluia! Hail, the resurrection day, Alleluia! King of glory, Soul of bliss, Alleluia! Everlasting life is this, Alleluia! Thee to know, Thy power to prove, Alleluia! Thus to sing and thus to love, Alleluia! | Right click on this page and add it to your bookmarks or favorites! Canada and Mexico: Read the latest news found by Google.
