More on Katrina and Stan

I’ve promised to keep you up to date on the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina. Of course, one doesn’t know which way to look these days, with the many tragedies that have been going on around the world. At the end of this post I will mention Hurricane Stan in relation to Mexico.
This from CAM’s Katrina Relief Blog (www.CAMRelief.org): CAM is establishing a Disaster Assistance Center in the town of Kenner, LA which will serve the Hispanic community with information, orientation and facilitation, helping victims contact appropriate public and private agencies and advocating on their behalf. Ministry teams from churches around the country will work to cleanup yards and houses in Kenner and Metairie, which have some 40,000 Hispanics, primarily Hondurans and Mexicans.
It’s going to be a long road back for many people who are now homeless and jobless. People who have lost loved ones. You can pray for the relief team and for the people that are struggling. You can also donate through the CAM site.
Work teams will also be needed – people that can show God’s love through practical repairs and construction. I talked to Phil O’Day at from CAM, and he told me that teams from any country are welcome. If your small group is interested in going, or a group from your church, or your extended family, just call 1-866-435-8548.
As you probably know, Mexico and much of Central America has been hit by Hurricane Stan. Rescue workers are having trouble even getting in, due to the massive mud slides.
As a hurricane, Stan actually caused little damage. But as it “calmed” into a tropical storm, the flooding caused major problems. There’s likely well over $2 billion Canadian in damage in Mexico. There are over 700 confirmed dead and hundreds missing in southern Mexico and Central America.
CAM’s missionaries are further north in Mexico, but I’ve heard quite a bit from CAM’s missionaries in Guatemala. CAM related Bible school SETECA and Christian radio station TGNA are helping to coordinate relief efforts.
