The Colombia Team Lands (and how to find them online)

Well, if they’re on schedule, the Prairie Christian Academy team has just landed in BogotÃ¡, Colombia!

If you received our recent newsletter (and if you haven’t, you should soon, if you’re on our Support Team), you know that Hannah is part of a team of women who are on a missions trip to Colombia. They will be involved mostly in children’s ministry, especially in poorer areas.

We would appreciate your prayers for Hannah and her team mates! They’ve had a long trip, and after a rest tonight they’ll hit the ground running tomorrow (Saturday). They leave Colombia on the 17th, arriving back home on the 18th.

Interestingly enough, BogotÃ¡ is almost 400 metres higher than Ixtapaluca, at 2640! So even though it’s further south than we are, it’s actually slightly cooler at this time of year (down to 6â„ƒ / 43â„‰ tonight). But that’s better than Three Hills at -9â„ƒ! So I’m sure they’ll be enjoying the climate change.

A Look Backward and Forward

Well, midsummer (summer solstice) has arrived here in the northern hemisphere. Since I haven’t had much of an opportunity to write lately, I’m taking a moment to look backward and forward to catch you up on what’s happening.

The last Two Weeks

Daryl Ferguson and Bob Cottrill — Daryl and my Dad check out the new shed we assembled.

I just finished a brief trip to Canada, to help my parents move. They just moved a few blocks away – within the same town – but if any of you have tried such a thing, you know how challenging it can be!

Thanks to Daryl and Iwona, and many from the local churches, who helped so much (and are still helping as my parents finish up the move!).

I also had a chance to see Hannah, and Shari’s parents, and many others in Three Hills before I took off back to Mexico.

During my absence from Mexico, lots was happening as usual! You’ll want to check out Rod’s post about the team that he and Mayra took down to Oaxaca – A Wonderful Week in Oaxaca.

The next Two Weeks

Tomorrow night another team arrives from Word of Life Chapel. They will be involved in construction and baking classes in the community of JesÃºs MarÃa, along with some outreach in the community of Los HÃ©roes. Shari has been especially busy getting ready for the massive baking classes, which Lord willing you will hear more about!

“Regular” ministry continues, as I get ready for Sunday’s continuing teaching on the Ten Commandments, and of course Hebrews.

At the beginning of July, Hannah will be coming home for the summer! Yes, we tried to time it so that we could both come back together, but it didn’t quite work out. So, as Hannah finishes her exams, we will prepare for her arrival!

On the side of practical matters, Avant and Camino Global are rushing toward unification as one mission. There are a thousand details to talk about and work through. The official date of launch is the 1st of July.

If you receive our newsletter, and if I have your email address, I will try to get some information out to you on or before that date. Otherwise, hopefully you’ll be seeing some changes here on our website shortly with more information, and we’ll get a letter to you by snail mail next month.

So, yes, a lot is happening right now! But it’s the longest day of the year – I should be able to get something done, right? 😀

Days of the Dead (information to check out)

Bread of the Dead – a common treat this time of year

This weekend Mexico celebrates one of its biggest holidays – the Day(s) of the Dead. Many believe that spirits of the dead will return tonight and tomorrow night. Offerings to the dead are left to help them on their journey through the underworld, a religious tradition which combines native and Roman Catholic beliefs. Many will also use the opportunity to worship Santa Muerte (Saint Death), a skeleton in a white dress that represents death and is said to offer favours, if you perform the right rituals and say the right prayers. Families will get together in graveyards to decorate the tombstones.

Camp – MKs and Bloggers

Late Saturday afternoon we returned from camp (and were greeted by a hailstorm in Ixtapaluca – go figure! Just a mild one, though…). A good time was had by all.

Topp Talk – Chuck and Karla Topp did a great job in the younger kids’ chapels

Nathanael had a great time, and I’m sure he’ll be talking about it for weeks. Even though he did fall out of the top bunk onto the cement. And there was that freak swing accident – ***kerTHUMP*** right on his face. So now when people greet him, they say,"Hi Nathana… what happened to you?!"

But it was fun. We learnt verses, songs, stories… had great food (I kept asking them when were were going to get the "yucky camp food", but they never served it), played great games (thanks to Tina)… I even got to lead an activity, and help with crafts, and help with the younger boys cabin.

One thing I noticed about this camp was that there were a lot of bloggers (and former or delinquent bloggers – but we won’t talk about them!) there. So let me see if I can remember them all, and not get nasty comments from the people I forget.

Helping in the kitchen among other things was The Ice Cream Grandma. The camp director is the man known by Knowing Your ABCDs.

Since it’s a family blog, I’ll mention The Smith Connection – the kids were at camp, and their parents showed up on the last day.

And we had someone in avoidance of the perfunctory who was also a great counsellor and game-leader. And we enjoyed getting to know the person who posts about This and That. The Aguirres helped with the youth chapel.

And, of course, yours truly.

So now we’re home recovering… Nathanael had a slight fever last night, but seems to be feeling better. And – did I hear a rumour that we’re supposed to check for lice?

I love camp.

Mexican Summer Missionaries 2010

I just read a brief report from fellow CAM missionaries the Buhlers. The report was all about the summer missionary program here in Mexico, that encourages Christian youth to reach out around Mexico using kids’ clubs. Every year thousands of children hear about the Lord Jesus in these clubs.

The training took place in July in Mexico City this year. 23 youth took the training – they represented 15 different churches and 8 states of Mexico!

Again many children heard the Gospel, and many made confessions of faith. The Buhlers ask for prayer for these children, as follow-up and discipleship continue in various parts of Mexico.

Dennis and Janell and their two kidlets serve the Lord in Mexico City with Youth Ministry International. We met Dennis and Janell through their blog, and have enjoyed a little (too little) time with them in person. Thanks to Dennis for letting me take over a little of his space for today!
