On our way to Taxco

I love Shari, she loves me, it’s our 10th anniversary!

We’re on our way to Taxco de Alarcón for a couple of days (in the Mexican state of Guerrero). Hannah and Nathanael will be enjoying some parent-free time at their friends’ house here in Cuernavaca. It’s been many years since we’ve been to Taxco, so we’re looking forward to visiting again. As a matter of fact, I think this photo was taken in Taxco. Of course, the photo above is Taxco at night (courtesy of pulpolux).

Taxco is a picturesque town of about 51,000 people known for its hundreds of silver shops, ornate cathedrals and narrow hilly streets. Check out the view of Taxco from space here. If you see us, wave.

We don’t have any specific plans – just planning to take it easy and explore. So we’ll talk to you when we return!

Meditations on Luke 9

My Dad publishes a email newsletter called Wordwise Insight. It features Bible study thoughts, questions from readers, and ideas for Bible study and your church.

I particularly enjoyed one article in yesterday’s issue, and thought I’d point you to it. It’s basically a few quick thoughts on discipleship, from Luke 9. It’s interesting to read through the chapter, and ask yourself, what was Jesus trying to teach people about Himself? And, what was Jesus trying to teach people about following Him?

For example, my Dad found four tests to see if discipleship is really happening, and three things that in some cases took priority over following Jesus.

Jesus always had a way of cutting right to the heart of the matter in each situation. We need to let Him do that in our own lives. Check out Tests of discipleship; a crisis of values, and more in the latest issue.

Swimming and our Thursday…

Yesterday was not a typical day, but since there’s no such thing I thought I’d tell you briefly about a sample day. I guess on a typical day I’d be in language school, but since I have the week off, things are a bit different.

Some things I did today: Took the kids to the fruit market for some fruit & veggies, tried to check what was wrong with our car air conditioning (no go – I guess it’s the mechanic’s turn), worked on some health insurance issues, sent out some email updates (that didn’t work the first time), answered some emails, played snap with Hannah, played basketball with Nathanael (briefly – short attention span), watered our garden, cleaned in the house, and lots more – can’t remember it all.

But the big activity of the day was going swimming – the first time we’ve been swimming since arriving. We went down the road to our friends’ house. And in my opinion, the pool was CoLDddd! But we had a little swim anyway. It was fun, and I took some video for you.

I actually made this little video for Grandma and Grandpa Winger, but I might as well share it with you too! Besides, you can see a bit of our living room. (Actually, that open space is supposed to be a dining room, but we don’t have any dining room furniture yet.)

Grandma and Grandpa gave Hannah and Nathanael these little straw-shooters for Valentine's Day, so they had fun shooting them around the house.

Our church

It’s always nice when someone else does the work for you. Our friends, the Harers, attend the same church we do here in Cuernavaca. A couple of weeks ago, Ken Harer took some photos of the church, and their typical Sunday morning. So I’m just going to send you on over to his blog to take a look. Iglesia Biblica El Renuevo

Our church is called Iglesia Biblica El Renuevo (The Renewal Bible Church). It’s small but growing. It’s maybe 15 minutes from our house, and we usually meet together between about 11am and 1-1:30pm on Sunday. Maybe I’ll write a little more about it another time.

If you look closely at some of the pictures, you can see our family. For example, we’re all in picture #4 – an excellent shot of our backs. 😉
