Just for fun
A new poll!
I know, I know – it’s about time. We now have a brand new poll on our website. Go and click on our logo in the top left hand corner, and then look on the left hand side of the page. There it is!
As you remember, the last question was How many books have you read in the last 6 months? We were amazed at the erudite group we have visiting our website. 16% had read over 25 books! How many “over”, I don’t know. But that is a lot of books. Maybe they were short books, but still.
This time, we’re actually going to make you do some thinking. It’s a tough question, but nobody is looking over your shoulder (at least, we didn’t send anyone to do so), so go ahead and take a stab at it. It’s completely hypothetical, of course, but it’s interesting to think about.
So what are you waiting for? Go vote! 😛
Pass the pipes
Just thought I’d stop by and show you this picture. It was taken 50.5 years ago. The older man with the pipe is about 91 years old (in the photo). He’s my great-grandfather, William Young.
The younger one with the pipe is my second cousin and his great-grandson Norm. We think so, anyway. Hw would be 2 but almost 3 in the picture. Here’s a picture of Grandpa Young in his younger days, and here again on the far left. As you can see, he gave up some of his hair but never did give up the moustache. Thanks to my Mom for sharing this one.

Yes, I had Jarritos
Back in early July I wrote this blog about bubble tea and the Mexican soft drink, Jarritos. I was responding to a blog over at Mexico Movies praising the soft drink, but I had never had it.
Well, I don’t feel quite so bad now. Jarritos was amazingly hard to find. The first time I saw it is was warm, so I decided to wait until I could find a cold one. Finally, about 2 weeks into my trip I got one at a grocery store, cold and everything. But, I guess I’m just not an orange refresco kind of guy. So I stand by my original comment on Dennis’ blog entry – it’s Coke or manzana for me! And by the way, there are some wonderful manzana (apple) varieties now. And I’m afraid the new Sour Apple Crush from Cadbury just doesn’t compare.
Yet another reason why I should move to Mexico. 😎
Let’s get Canadian
Here’s an interesting site, or group of sites, for those interested in history, particularly Canadian history. Northern Blue Publishing puts out the site, and about all I know about them is their name. [Edit – this company had to shut down their site. The information was moved to the Canadawiki, and that is where the links below lead.]
First we have the Today in Canadian History page. I learned that Henry Hudson first entered what is now known as Hudson Bay on this day in 1610. There’s also birthday headlines, and a quote of the day. Today’s quote comes from Jack L. Warner, a producer of movies such as Casablanca and My Fair Lady (yes, the co-founder of Warner Brothers Studios was born in London, Ontario). Jack said to Albert Einstein,”I have a theory of relatives too. Don’t hire ’em.“
Thanks to the wonders of RSS, I can show you the other page right here. You can read about Canadian Birthdays on their page, but here are the latest ones they’ve posted:
[Sorry – this feed was causing problems in the new blog, so it’s all gone]
Spanish word of the day
Learning Spanish? There are a number of sites online that provide a “Spanish word of the day”. One of these is DonQuijote.com, which provides a word of the day as seen below:
StudySpanish.com does the same thing:
