Ten years ago today was the epic cake decorating class – one of many baking classes that Shari taught at the community centre in the community of Jesús María.

Ten years ago today we woke up to discover no water in the house – and lots of water outside! It was a Sunday morning, and I was heading off to a music practice in Jesús María, when I saw this…
We called the water company of course, who told us they would come that day. But come evening, no water company, and the fountain was still pouring water out.
The next day we were heading out to a team retreat – still no water in the house – still a lot outside – and finally later that day the workers came, smashed the sidewalk, ripped up the ground, and fixed/replaced the plastic pipe. And we still made it – slightly late – to our retreat. Where we were finally able to get some water!
Not everything that we try at the community centre “works”. The drama/theatre/cinema course was one of those things.
I created a complete course in the community of Jesús María, but for whatever reason it fizzled out. Time of day? Promotion? Time of year? A poor teacher? Who knows!
That’s not to say it won’t be resurrected someday! Meanwhile, all I have are the memories, and lots of notes and course materials.
This poster represented some basic “house rules”. The other photo shows two students doing some improv.
10 years ago today, Hannah was baptized, along with 25 other people from the two Path of Life churches in Ixtapaluca! There’s a video of the whole event here, but here’s Hannah giving her testimony:
Ten years ago today we were having a daily sports camp in the community of Jesús María, run by our friends Mike and Teo. In the photo below (click the image for a larger version), you can see the soccer players in the foreground, and if you look closely in the back to the right you can see the basketball court.
Of course, in the middle is the iconic water tower / sundial that became the logo for our community centres. At the bottom of it you can see a mural that presented the gospel.
The sports camp was a great opportunity to share the gospel not only with kids in the community, but also with their parents who came to watch.

Drive about an hour into Mexico City, and you’ll come across the beautiful Xochimilco Ecopark. Actually, we just went again this past March, and I was a little sad. What had been a somewhat “wild” overgrown place was now very developed. Yes, developed as a park – it’s still beautiful, but to my taste it isn’t quite what it was.
Ten years ago today we were there with Hannah and Nathanael. I think this is when they were doing some “wetlands” research for school. We had the place almost to ourselves – except for the many kinds of birds and bugs and plants.
Here’s one look – click the picture for a bigger version.
