Quick video of the kids’ club…
On Wednesday I was able to visit the kids’ club put on by the team from Arlington, Texas, USA. Here’s a quick look at the club. We’re thankful to the Lord for each child that heard about Him this week! Hopefully some will be back at the kids’ club that will be held next week…
July. Crazy, man.
Just a little video blog about July. Just a note – when you see the sports club, you’re just seeing a few of the girls play (guys and girls were switching off). Today they had a lot more people – I think there were … I forget already … 10 or 20 guys there that participated and heard the Gospel. Praise the Lord!
Praying for Kaitlyn
Two days ago I sent out an email update (if you don’t get those, you can request them here) requesting prayer for a little girl, whose name is Kaitlyn. Here’s what I wrote in the update:
First, a prayer request for some of our co-workers here in Mexico. I decided not to write about it on our website because things are happening very fast, and I want to protect the family’s privacy until they have a chance to inform their family and friends.
On the 30th of June, it was discovered that the 4 year old daughter of a missionary family has a tumour on the brain. Her Dad was out of the country, so her Mom was dealing with this without him. After talking to the doctors they decided to take her to Portand, OR right away.

Yesterday, on the way to the airport, they got word from the neuro-surgeon that she should NOT fly in her condition. So they turned around and came home.
Now she is having surgery at 6pm in Puebla, Mexico – that’s RIGHT NOW as I send this! She should be in the hospital until Sunday, and then they’re hoping to fly to Portland a few days later to continue whatever treatment she’ll need.
Thanks so much to those of you who prayed! Kaitlyn is now home, and Dad is with the family again. They’re planning to go to the US, but it probably won’t be until next week.
Of course, this is only the beginning, and the family still needs your prayers. The family has set up a website where you can get more information, see photos of Kaitlyn, and sign a guestbook. There’s a journal there, which unfortunately doesn’t have an RSS feed, but you can sign up for email notifications when there’s news. Visit Kaitlyn Contreras’ website now! And thanks again for your prayers.
The 7 New Wonders
It’s almost time for the winners to be announced – that is, the 7 new wonders of the world. The list has been narrowed down to 21, and now you can vote in the final 7. There are only 35 hours left to vote, so you may have trouble accessing the site, but here it is – new7wonders.com.
Actually, if I understand right there will be 7 wonders plus an honorary member – the pyramids of Giza, Egypt. The pyramids are the only remaining wonder of the ancient 7 wonders.
It was fascinating to look over the list of the final 21. In a sense, it was amazing to see what people have accomplished all throughout history. It also makes you wonder what could have been accomplished if it hadn’t been for death, war, and disease. Then again, it was sad to see how misguided much of our achievement has been, and how small and old it all seems in the grand scheme of things. "Unless the LORD builds…" (Psa 127:1)
Mexico has its own entry – Chich’en Itza (Chichén Itzá), in the northern centre of the Yucatán peninsula. This was a major Mayan centre back in its day (the last half of the first millennium AD). The city may have been destroyed violently in a civil war, but the details are vague.

The most famous part of the site is the Temple of Kukulcan, sometimes called El Castillo. Kukulcan was a feathered serpent god worshipped by the Mayans, and on the fall and spring equinox the shadow of a snake slithers down the side of the temple following the sun’s movement.
Check out this 360° tour of the ruins of Chich’en Itza. Here’s another interesting site about the ruins, particularly El Castillo.
The results will be announced on 07/07/07 in Lisbon, Portugal. It will be broadcast around the world, featuring a who’s who’s of world celebrities. You can catch it on TV or by webcast.
But as you watch the world’s best, celebrate something else – the day when all humankind’s fantastic energy, ingenuity and creativity will be focused on love for one another and the Creator.
Canada Quiz
I thought you might like to try the Canada quiz I put together for the party here yesterday. If you’re Canadian, you’ll find a lot of it pretty easy (but probably not all of it). Remember, it was geared toward Mexicans, but anyone might find it interesting.
It was kind of a weird weekend, actually. I spend so much time thinking about Mexico, it was strange to focus on Canada. Then all these people come to our house, and everything is so Canadian, when usually it looks much more Mexican around here!
Someone asked me at the party if I knew all the answers before I wrote the quiz. It’s hard to guess at how many I would have answered right – I’m guessing I would have gotten around 35 or so out of 40. 87.5%. So yes, I did learn a few things myself. 🙂
The quiz is in pdf format, and can be opened with programs like Foxit Reader. You’ll find the Canada Day Quiz here, and in a separate document the answers.
Tell your friends about it, and leave a comment to let me know how you did! Be sure to tell me if you’re Canadian or not – that does make a difference!
