The MOVE, part II

I last wrote about our move on the 11th, which was the day we officially started moving stuff. Well, actually we started a few days earlier, but hadn’t moved much. We hauled stuff through a mild blizzard on the first day. After a couple of hours we convinced ourselves that it was actually good weather to move. Not too hot or sunny, the moisture easily wiped off the boxes before it melted, and it gave us something to talk about.

Anyway, the next day was better, and as the week wore on I was wishing I knew where in the world my shorts were packed. Shari’s brother Jeff helped us a LOT, as well as people from our church, and our apartment. The youth group even came over for an hour to help.

The problem was that it was too close to bother with a truck to move boxes (half the distance we walked was indoors), and yet it was still a long way. I figure between all of us we walked about 63km or 39 miles, mostly carrying boxes, pushing dollies, or carrying furniture, some of that up stairs. I walked about 27km or 17 miles myself.

Now we were supposed to be out of the apartment, and have the old one cleaned by Saturday. As you know, Nathanael was born on Friday. The other complication was that on Tuesday (yes, the first day of our move) I hurt my back, and by the end of the week I could hardly lift my arm. Saturday was the day Shari was discharged, so it was mid afternoon before I was even able to think about finishing moving stuff to the new apartment and then cleaning. I didn’t know who to call, so I just sent out an email to a few friends asking if they knew anyone who could help. (of course, most of them didn’t get the email until Monday!)

I was planning to stay up until I finished the task, but of course there were other things to do and I was a little tired, so I had to give up hope. The good news is, some friends from church dropped what they were doing and came to help on Sunday. I moved the rest of our stuff, and together we polished off the cleaning. We are thankful!! Praise the Lord! Never have we had so much help from so many people that we can’t possibly pay back!

Now the renovators were supposed to come to the old apartment on Sunday, but we didn’t see them. On Monday I talked to our manager to ask if there was anything else that needed to be done. She said that it looked good and had already been painted! So it all worked on in the end. I’m sure glad that’s over with. Now we just have to unpack at the other end… 🙄
