Katrina Relief headquarters
Hurricane Rita is past, and it spared many of the populated areas that it could have hit.
Still, it did a lot of damage. Hundreds may need to be rescued, and more people were rescued from New Orleans after the newly dried out city flooded once again.
Our Canadian director and his wife have some guests – their son and his family had to evacuate from New Orleans. I’m sure it’s nice to visit with the grandkids, but the circumstances could have been better!
Our former Canadian director lives in Montana, and is married to a Canadian. I heard from Harrison and Dorothy Smith yesterday. They had news about the CAM relief effort.
It sounds like some 40,000 Latino residents have been effected by the storms in New Orleans. Harrison and Dorothy will go there and set up CAM’s emergency relief office in the facilities of the New Orleans Bible Church. The church is actually just north west of New Orleans, in the satellite community of Metarie. From here, the relief efforts can be focused on Metarie and Kenner where most Hispanics live. The Smiths are planning to be there until Christmas.
More details of the plan will be made public soon. However, I do know that CAM is hoping to invite church groups to help with emergency repairs and cleanup for those who need it most. Does this sound like something people in your church would be interested? How about your small group, or your family? If so, stay tuned to CAM’s Katrina Relief site for more.
