Stickers and Candies
In many contexts in Mexico, English is cool and exotic, and so it looks cool on signs and brand names and things like that. However, because not too many people know much beyond “hello” and “red”, the results can sometimes be – creative.
Take for example this yummy hard candy…
I see symbols of Canada here all the time – probably more than any other country except Mexico. But I admit, I was less than impressed to see the stickers on the back of this public transportation van the other day:
It’s a Canadian flag on the left, a Canadian maple leaf on the right, and in the middle – Saint Death.
Saint Death is the centre of a lot of religious worship around here – death personified. No, I don’t think the owner was saying “Death to Canada!” or anything like that – more likely he was putting together two things that he thought were cool. Or perhaps asking Saint Death’s help to get to Canada?
Anyway, there are some things that should never go together. Maybe I should find him a beaver sticker.
