It’s Time to Check the Facts (Notes on Discernment)
So we’ve heard something that we’re not sure about. Is that actually true?
Soon we’ll be talking about how to respond to error and sin, but first we have to check our facts.
Now remember, we’ve already made “growing in wisdom” a part of daily life (see Discernment Training). But now it’s time to get specific.
- Understand: Am I sure that I understand what’s being taught? What exactly do I need to examine? (Proverbs 1:5)
- Pray: Ask for wisdom. The Spirit will guide me through His Word. (Psalm 143:10)
- Read: Look for clear and direct teaching on the topic in the Scriptures. This isn’t a study of vague verses, but teaching that is clear and relates directly to the topic (if available). (2Timothy 3:14-15)
- Study: Look for other passages of Scripture that relate, do more in-depth study. (Psalm 119:160)
- Interact: Talk with other followers of Christ, read good commentaries and books. (Hebrews 10:23-25; Hebrews 13:7)
- Continue: Sometimes the answer is clear. Sometimes, we need to keep studying and praying for a long time. We may never come to a conclusion. This is a normal process of growth. (2Peter 3:18)
