Protests in Mexico City
As a follow-up to my previous post on the Mexican election, I thought I’d write briefly about the protest in Mexico City on Sunday. Hundreds of thousands showed up, some estimates say between 1-1.5 million. We do praise the Lord that the protest was generally peaceful. With a few exceptions, the protests, which continue, do continue to be peaceful.
However, the supporters of López Obrador are still trying to keep the attention of the people and push their demand for a vote-by-vote recount. A recent poll says that most Mexicans don’t want the recount, but there is still a lot of support for López Obrador, Mexico City’s former mayor, who is claiming that fraud brought his opponent to power.
As I mentioned in my last post, there may not be a final decision until September, so please remember Mexico in your prayers.

I appreciate your blog and I am delighted by the sweet voices of Hannah and Nathanael. My daughter and her friend left North Carolina today for a semester in Cuernavaca.
I am excited for them but, of course, concerned for their safety. Do you hear of or see much street violence in Cuernavaca? How have you been treated by the natives?

Hi Elizabeth,
Cuernavaca is a great place to live. We’ve only been here a few weeks, but so far so good! 🙂 We have friends who have been here longer, of course.
We haven’t seen any street violence, and the police seem to be quite helpful. The people have treated us very well – we’ve made a few friends already and are looking forward to making more! They’ve been very helpful, especially considering we’re new and need lots of help and advice.
Of course, as with any city there are basic precautions you should take. But if your daughter and her friend are wise, take those precautions and are friendly and gracious to the people around them, I’m sure they’ll have a great time! 🙂
