Prayer Update for 19 February 2009 (audio)
A quick update on Alejandra and her baby, Shari, and Nathanael…
A quick update on Alejandra and her baby, Shari, and Nathanael…
I can give you a bit of an update on the prayer requests from the last post.
First, Alejandra and her new healthy little girl are doing well. 🙂 Apparently they are under special observation for the next 24 hours, since there were some issues, but it sounds like they’ll be fine. I’m sure the family appreciates you’re prayers!
Shari was helping Hannah with homework earlier, but was able to get some rest later in the evening. Hopefully this bug will pass by quickly!
Nathanael and I went to the doctor. It looks like the infection got into his ears (only one ear was bothering him). So he’s got medicine going in his ears (drops), mouth (liquid), up his nose (spray) and … well … he had an injection too. But I’ll let him tell you where he got that, if he wants.
So he’s getting one more shot tomorrow – hopefully all this will clear up the infection quickly.
And after about 3 hours of sleep last night, and varying amounts since Saturday … well, I’m ready for some sleep.
We would like to share a few things you could pray about right now if you want to be involved…
For the record, Hannah was somewhat sick but seems quite a bit better today. Myself – well, after 3 hours of sleep I’m not doing too great, but I think I’ll be well enough to get Nathanael to the doctor. 🙂
Thanks for your prayers for those three. Sounds like the first one could be the most serious, but we don’t have details yet – we’ll give you an update tomorrow if we can (or even tonight).
Thanks!
We have a guest here right now from Nebraska – Darrol Prusia. Darrol and his family are preparing to move to Mexico to serve the Lord through sports ministry. It’s been great to get to know Darrol a little bit, even though the time has been short.

On Monday night Darrol and I got together with some families from our church – Rod and Mayra, MartÃn and Laura, and Miguel and Tania. We were meeting with our friends from Tlalpan Mexico City – Antonio and Becky Muñoz. Antonio and Becky serve at a church there in Tlalpan.
We were meeting to talk about various issues related to leadership in the church. In March, MartÃn will be "officially" recognized as the church’s first elder/pastor, and Miguel will be the church’s first deacon.
It was fascinating to listen to these believers struggle with issues – most of which the church family is actually dealing with right now. Some were issues that believers everywhere have to deal with. Other issues were intertwined with a lot of cultural issues (for example, all the intricacies of the church family being involved in family fiestas).

It was very helpful to hear the wisdom of this group, especially for someone new to ministry in Mexico like me. But it was also so encouraging to see the Lord raising up leadership for His people here in Mexico.
I’ve seen such a desire to serve God in these two couples, such a willingness to learn and think outside the box, and that all-important recognition that they need the Spirit of God to serve in His Church.
At the end of the meeting we knelt to ask the Lord for wisdom. Please, kneel with us and pray for these couples as they continue their journey with the Lord, and face the challenges that lie ahead. And that should include the continuing ministry of Rod and Mayra, Antonio and Becky, and Darrol and his wife Kim. I know they would appreciate it if you prayed with us.

Today we went to Hannah’s and Nathanael’s schools to talk to the “powers that be” about homework. Listen to find out what happened…
It was really all God’s fault. After all, He’s the one that makes them grow. If it hadn’t been for that, we wouldn’t have been so concerned.

Shari and I were having a conversation two or three months ago. The problem was that Hannah and Nathanael didn’t have enough clothes. Sure, sometimes clothes get wrecked, but frankly kids of 4 and 7 tend to grow quickly, and pretty soon the pants that used to fit Hannah were shorts, and Nathanael’s long sleeve sweater had become short sleeve (which was tight enough to show his rippling muscles).
So what were we going to do about it? Well, we didn’t have a lot of extra cash. We planned to make some adjustments to the budget so that in months ahead we could save up extra for some clothes. That might not help right away, but hopefully it would help in 2009. But would it be enough?
And God watched our conversation. Was He chuckling? Frustrated? Waving His hands, trying to get our attention so He could tell us to go read Luke 12:22-34?
Well, whatever He was doing, He had a plan. Suddenly, over December and January, we started to get covered by an avalanche of clothes. Hand-me-downs from family in Canada. Gifts from friends and family. Then someone came down from the USA, after doing some bargain-hunting, with yet more clothes. And I understand there are more clothes that someone sent that are on their way.

Unbelievable (at least to those of us with little faith).
So thank you to all of you who were so thoughtful! You have no idea how perfect the timing was. Thanks!
We’ll still need our “budget tweaks” to buy a few specific things we’re still missing, but we’re sure a lot better off than we thought we would be a couple of months ago. And Hannah and Nathanael are really enjoying their new clothes that actually fit (who said kids don’t like getting clothes as gifts?).
So, note to self. Don’t worry about clothes. Do you think God doesn’t care? Do you think He’s not paying attention?
Really, now. Time to get a proper perspective.
