The Salad Spinner (podcast)
It’s been too long since I did a podcast, so I’m just stopping by to talk about a few things I’m thankful for. That’s all!

I have no idea if I have my Latin right, but alter anno domini should be “another year of the Lord”, and that is, of course, what 2021 is, just like 2020 was.
The actual phrase, which we sometimes shorten to A.D., is anno Domini Nostri Jesu Christi – The year of the Lord Jesus Christ. The phrase recognizes that the coming of the Lord Jesus changed everything. And, of course, it reminds us that every year is His – even the ones before His birth. (Colossians 1:16-17)
This past December was a month full of big astronomical events – especially the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, the so-called “Christmas Star”. I kept seeing articles before the event, and I was amazed at how much they emphasized, over and over, that this was just “chance”. Of course, they were referring to the fact that it was not an event that necessarily happens only in December, something someone might have thought because of the “Christmas Star” moniker.
But it seemed like there was something going on above and beyond that. As if everyone was rushing to say that this all just happened by chance – the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter had no purpose, no planning behind it.
But, of course, it did.
Oh, I’m not suggesting that we can now start the countdown to the Second Coming or anything like that. But as believers, we all know that nothing in the heavens is by chance. In fact, “The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory.” (Psalm 97:6) God placed wonders in the heavens that we would be able to see in December of 2020, so that we would look up and realize that there is Someone glorious, Someone righteous, who is far above every ruler and false god.
And so the world rushed to suppress this truth, while still drinking in the wonder of God’s Creation. (Romans 1:18-19)
And so we ended 2020 with some wonderful reminders of Who is really in control. We ended 2020 with some wonderful reminders that we are responsible to Him for our actions on this tiny planet.
I hope you were able to spend some time meditating on the coming of the Lord. On Sunday mornings, we took time to meditate on Luke 1, in four parts, as we prepared for the year ahead:
…and because of that Person, Jesus Christ, I pray that the words of Zechariah will be true for you: “…that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.” (Luke 1:74-75)
Now that we’re emerging from the holiday season (which ends tomorrow with Three Kings Day), we’re looking ahead to activities and studies and outreach in the year ahead, so we would appreciate your prayers.
And I’ll leave you with these words from the end of the Psalm I quoted above – another fitting text as we enter into the year of the Lord 2021:
O you who love the LORD, hate evil!
Psalm 97:10-12
He preserves the lives of his saints;
he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Light is sown for the righteous,
and joy for the upright in heart.
Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous,
and give thanks to his holy name!
It’s been a while since I’ve shared an update about COVID-19 in Mexico, partly because things have been pretty stable.
In our area, we have remained at the orange alert since the summer – that is, one away from red, the highest level.
Well, as of today, we are once again at level red in Mexico City.
Here is a chart showing positive cases per day. The chart doesn’t mean a lot, in some ways, except that public perception is of course affected by the public information.
A note on what you’re seeing. This represents new positive tests (a 7 day average). As we know by now, there are a lot of cases that go untested (and testing remains low in Mexico), and a lot of false positives. But generally, rates have been remarkably stable since things started opening up again mid-summer. In fact, if you didn’t know better, you’d think that opening up decreased cases.
There’s one quick jump in October, and one quick jump in November. Those are actually because of a single day (two single days) of extremely high numbers. I’m not sure why that would be. And actually, I see the same spikes in several countries – does anyone know what that’s from? Changes in policy? Testing methods? (Oddly, I see it being blamed on different things in each country, which makes no sense…) You can actually see a little spike in Canada at the same time in October, if you look at the chart below.
But without those two days, the line would remain fairly stable from July until now, with a slight increase over the last month. Testing has also increased, so that could be a part of the reason.
Now, this chart represents deaths attributed to COVID-19.
This time we have Mexico on the top and Canada on the bottom. Once again, there are a couple of days – one in particular – that were extremely high. Other than that, numbers were stable and dropping over the summer, and rising steadily in October, and then levelling off over the past month.
As with many different coronaviruses, perhaps there is a climate issue here. Which would mean we would expect to see numbers rise in Mexico through February, and then begin to drop again.
At the moment, there is lots of room in the “COVID-19” hospitals in our area. The problem seems to be that health workers are being given much more to do, and hospitals are not taking other patients, or else patients are not going to get the treatment they need due to the fear of COVID-19. From several sources I’m hearing that very serious treatment is becoming much harder to get, which means we may see an increase in deaths from several causes.
Another issue now is that many families who are trying to pay for treatments, or pay for food, are suddenly finding themselves without work right before Christmas. As the cold weather comes and clothing and heating expenses increase in our area, there will be less money to pay for it because of the closures. Another concern is that alcohol purchases are high at this time of year, and more people are stuck at home, leading to a serious increase in abuse.
Several of us from the church met for prayer last night. For the time being, we will return to our interactive online services, starting tomorrow. But we are working on some plans to improve our connection with one another, especially in the new year.
Right now the level red is supposed to continue until the 10th of January. But if cases rise during the time of cold weather (and of course cold weather sickness apart from COVID-19 does generally increase in the colder weather in Mexico City), the lockdown will likely be extended.
So do pray with us as we make ministry plans for the new year. It will look a lot different from last year, but we are also coming into it knowing a lot more than we did last year.
Yes! We have returned safely to Mexico. Thanks so much to those of you who have been praying for us!
Yes! We came home tired, and are still recovering, to be honest. But God has been good as we have worked to get the household running again, and as we try to remember old routines and create new ones.
And, as you might guess from the photo above, a highlight for us over the past few days was Sunday – the 4th Anniversary celebration at our church!
With the many uncertainties of travel and health, we were making no promises that we would be there, although we had told several people we would try. The result was that some people were surprised to see us, which was fun.
We decided to continue with our series in Romans, and so our theme for the day had to do with our salvation and our relationship with the Spirit. Oscar shared the message on Romans 8:1-11. You can see Romans 8:1 on the cake, and the phrase from Romans 8:6 on the banner below – “to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”
God also blessed us with a Scripture reading from Colossians 1:15-20, a wonderful text about the preeminence of Christ and the confidence we can have in Him as the Head of the Church.
It was a tremendous blessing to hear a number of testimonies as well; to hear what God has been doing in the hearts of so many.
4 years! And God continues working on so many hearts through the ministry of this new church. Thank you to all who have prayed for and supported this work in so many ways.
The day had another added bonus – after the service we had a baby shower for Josué – soon to make his appearance, Lord willing! Josué is the little baby of our friends Oscar and Viri.
As is often the case here, the proud parents and their family not only received gifts but gave gifts, hosting the party and giving out some special mementos of the day. We’re so thankful for parents who are preparing to ground their new child in the truth of Christ.
Here are a few more pictures for you from the service. Lord willing I’ll upload some higher resolution pictures into our album eventually.
It was great to see many of you in central/northern Alberta over the weekend! I wish we could have visited longer with everyone.

I’m just stopping by to update those of you in Alberta about a couple of upcoming services we’ll be involved in, Lord willing. If you would like to come and see us, please be in touch with the churches below to be sure you know what restrictions or limitations they have due to COVID-19 regulations.
